De luchtfoto is op 29 april 1989 genomen: ten westen van Barendrecht, letterlijk onder de rook van Rotterdam, lag -tot aan de jaren negentig- deze agrarische polder met het eigenzinnige gehucht Smitshoek als centrum. Zover als het oog reikte zag men spruiten groeien of schapen lopen. Toen de Regio Rijnmond haar oog op dit gebied had laten vallen om mee te doen aan de grote verstedelijkingsoperatie 'Vinex' veranderde er veel.

Ik zelf was toen werkzaam bij het ontwerpbureau Wissing en heb allereerst meegetekend aan deze Vinexwijk 'Carnisselande'. Daarna ben ik 15 jaar als zelfstandig kunstadviseur voor de gemeente Barendrecht betrokken geweest bij het ambitieuze programma voor de toepassing van beeldende kunst in de openbare ruimte van deze nieuwe wijk, onder de poëtische titel 'Het Elastisch Perspectief'.

In de kunstcommissie zat ook de gemeentelijk stedenbouwkundige Harry Lievaart. Een aimabele man die er geen geheim van maakte dat hij zijn deelname aan het kunstprogramma tot zijn leukere activiteiten rekende. Toen hij met pensioen ging, heb ik hem als afscheid deze collage geschonken. De keuze voor elastiek als toegevoegd materiaal lag voor de hand...

The aerial photograph was taken on 29 April 1989: to the west of Barendrecht, literally under the smoke of Rotterdam, lay -until the 1990s- this agricultural polder with the quirky hamlet of Smitshoek as its centre. As far as the eye could see, one could see sprouts growing or sheep walking. When the Rijnmond Region had its eye on this area to participate in the big urbanisation operation “Vinex”, a lot changed.

I myself was working at the design agency Wissing at the time and first co-designed this Vinex neighbourhood “Carnisselande”. After that, I was involved for 15 years as an independent art consultant for the municipality of Barendrecht in the ambitious programme for the application of visual art in the public space of this new district, under the poetic title “The Elastic Perspective”.

The art committee also included municipal urban planner Harry Lievaart. An amiable man who made no secret of the fact that he counted his participation in the art programme among his more enjoyable activities. When he retired, I gave him this collage as a farewell.
